Prepare yourselves because Dijon is in the spotlight! This sumptuous Creamy Dijon Chicken features swiftly pan-seared chicken breasts smothered in a rich, velvety Dijon mustard sauce. It’s an elegant, seemingly high-end dish crafted from simple, affordable components. My secret weapon for a special touch? Just a dash of Worcestershire sauce. This Dijon chicken recipe is irresistibly tasty and sure to be a family favorite!
This dish utilizes one of my beloved ingredient pairings: Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce. When combined with a bit of heavy cream and parmesan, they result in an exquisite sauce! Here’s everything required:
Chicken Breasts: Typically, I use chicken breasts for dishes like this, though boneless, skinless chicken thighs are also a good alternative.
Garlic: Just a few cloves of garlic add a significant amount of flavor to the sauce.
Olive Oil and Butter: The chicken breasts are cooked in olive oil, and garlic is sautéed in a touch of butter.
Dijon Mustard and Worcestershire: Dijon mustard shines in this recipe. Both Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce provide the primary flavors of the sauce. The tanginess from the Dijon combined with the savory umami from the Worcestershire is a perfect match!
Chicken Broth: Chicken broth aids in deglazing the pan, lifting up all those delicious browned bits, and acts as the base of the sauce.
Heavy Cream and Parmesan Cheese: A small quantity of heavy cream and parmesan cheese thickens the sauce, adding a rich, creamy flavor.
Spinach: For added greens and a splash of color, I included spinach.
Seasoning: The chicken breasts are seasoned with a mix of salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder. This ensures every part of the dish is packed with flavor!
Can Yellow Mustard Replace Dijon Mustard?
I wouldn’t advise swapping Dijon mustard with yellow mustard. Dijon has a more intense, sharp character that complements sauces better than the milder, less complex yellow mustard.
Not Fond of Mustard?
I understand. But trust me, this recipe doesn’t have an overwhelming mustard flavor and the flavors blend wonderfully. I tested this dish multiple times with varying amounts of Dijon mustard to find the perfect balance. It’s just enough to provide that tangy, warm Dijon flavor without dominating the dish. You can always adjust the sauce to add a bit more mustard for a stronger Dijon taste.
Serving Ideas
We enjoyed this creamy Dijon chicken over fluffy mashed potatoes to absorb all that marvelous sauce. However, buttered noodles, pasta, or rice would also be delightful companions. A straightforward side salad or Caesar salad would pair nicely as well. And quick-cooked veggies like this easy sautéed asparagus are always a great option.
1.
Combine Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Pat the chicken thighs dry, then sprinkle both sides with the spice mixture.
2.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the chicken thighs and cook until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes on each side.
3.
Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside. Add minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 1 minute.
4.
Add chicken broth, heavy cream, and Dijon mustard to the skillet. Stir and bring to a simmer.
5.
Return the chicken to the skillet, spooning some of the sauce over the top. Simmer for a few more minutes until the sauce slightly thickens.
Combine the seasoning for the chicken in a small dish: Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and freshly ground black pepper.
Carefully slice each chicken breast into two thinner fillets using a sharp knife. Coat each fillet on both sides with the seasoning mixture.
Warm a large frying pan over medium heat and pour in the olive oil. Once the pan is hot, introduce the chicken and cook until golden brown and thoroughly cooked (approximately 4 minutes per side). Transfer the chicken to a clean plate and cover to maintain warmth.
Add the butter and minced garlic to the same pan. Lower the heat to medium-low and sauté the garlic for a minute until aromatic.
Pour in the chicken broth and mix in the Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Combine and scrape any browned bits from the pan’s base.
Integrate the heavy cream and grated parmesan cheese, stirring thoroughly. Let the sauce bubble gently in the pan for five minutes. Taste the sauce and add more salt and pepper if necessary.
Incorporate the fresh spinach, stirring it into the sauce until the heat wilts the spinach.
Return the cooked chicken breasts to the skillet, generously covering them with the Dijon sauce. Allow the chicken to reheat. Serve hot alongside your preferred side dish and delight in the meal!
Steps to Prepare Creamy Dijon Chicken – Visual Guide
In a small mixing bowl, combine 1 tsp Italian seasoning, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp onion powder, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp freshly cracked black pepper.
Utilizing a sharp blade, cautiously cut each chicken breast into two thinner pieces. Use the seasoning mix to season both sides of each breast.
Warm up a large skillet over medium heat and incorporate 2 Tbsp olive oil. Once the skillet is adequately hot, places the chicken in it and cook each side until they turn golden brown and are cooked through (nearly 4 minutes per side). Transfer the cooked chicken to a clean plate and cover it to retain warmth.
Introduce 2 Tbsp butter and 2 minced garlic cloves into the same skillet. Reduce the heat to medium-low and sauté for one minute until the garlic is aromatic.
Pour 1 cup of chicken stock into the skillet, then incorporate 1 Tbsp of Dijon mustard and 1 tsp of Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine, ensuring to scrape up any browned bits stuck to the skillet’s base.
Add 1/3 cup of heavy cream and 2 Tbsp of parmesan. Stir thoroughly. Let the sauce simmer in the skillet for 5 minutes. Taste the sauce now and season with a pinch of salt and pepper if needed.
Incorporate 2 cups of fresh spinach, stirring into the sauce, allowing the heat to wilt the leaves.
Finally, place the seared chicken breasts back into the skillet and drizzle the Dijon sauce over them. Let the chicken warm through.
Now all that remains is to plate this scrumptious Dijon chicken with some creamy mashed potatoes, pasta, or your chosen side. And remember to top it off with some of that delicious sauce! 😉
